Black Eyed Pea Curry (Lobia Masala)

Vegan, protein-packed and gluten-free Indian style Black Eyed Pea Curry made with simple ingredients. This recipe is my family favorite I am sure it becomes your family favorite curry too.

Black eyed peas curry (lobia masala)

Ingredients:-

 1 cup Dried Black Eyed Peas , soaked in water for about 1-2 hours
 2 cups Water
 1 tbsp Cooking Oil
 ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
 ¼ tsp Mustard Seeds (optional)
 ½ tsp Finely Chopped Garlic
 ½ cup Finely Chopped Onion
 1 tsp Finely Chopped Green Chili
 1 cup Fresh Tomato Puree or use canned tomatoes
 1 tsp Coriander Powder
 ¼ tsp Turmeric
 1 tsp Red Chili Powder or as per your taste
 ½ tsp Garam Masala
 Salt to taste
 Fresh Finely Chopped Cilantro
 Lemon Juice

Directions:-

For preparing the black-eyed beans or lobia, soak them in enough water for 1-2 hours or overnight. Drain when ready to cook the curry.

Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add mustard and cumin seeds and allow them to crackle.

Add the onion and sauté it till it turns golden.

Add the green chilies, garlic. Sauté till the raw smell goes away.

Add the tomato puree and cook until the oil begins to separate.

Add the spices; turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Mix well and sauté for a few seconds.

Add the black-eyed peas or lobia and cook it well along with the spices for 6-7 minutes.

Add 2 cups of water and salt. Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles or till the black-eyed beans is done.

When the pressure gets released, open the cooker. Garnish with some cilantro/coriander and squeeze lemon juice on top.

Serve hot with white rice, chapatti, naan, or flatbread Enjoy!

Recipe Note:-

1 All the spices used in this curry you can get easily on any Indian grocery stores or any spice store.

2 Adjust the water consistency as per your preference.

3 I used soaked black eyed pea if you don’t have time for soaking, use canned and also can be made in instant pot.
